Peatland and Mangrove Conservation Project in Borneo

Borneo's Vital Ecosystems Revived

Our conservation project in Borneo focuses on the protection and restoration of peatland and mangrove forests, two of the planet's most vital carbon sinks. These ecosystems are not only crucial for carbon sequestration but also provide habitat for diverse species and protect against flooding and erosion.

Avoided Planned Deforestation (APD)

This project on halting deforestation activities that are legally sanctioned but can be avoided through strategic conservation efforts. In North Kalimantan, the initiative targets peatland and mangrove areas that are at risk of being cleared for agricultural expansion or infrastructural development. By engaging local communities, governments, and stakeholders in conservation agreements, sustainable land management practices, and alternative livelihood opportunities, the project aims to prevent the loss of these critical ecosystems, thereby preserving their biodiversity and carbon sequestration capabilities.

Avoided Unplanned Deforestation (AUD)

This initiative addresses the prevention of spontaneous or illegal deforestation activities in North Kalimantan, particularly in peatland and mangrove regions. The project implements measures to monitor, detect, and swiftly respond to unauthorized clearing, logging, or land conversion. It involves community-based patrols, the use of remote sensing technology for real-time monitoring, and the strengthening of law enforcement mechanisms. Educational campaigns and the promotion of sustainable land use practices among local populations are also key components, aiming to reduce the drivers of unplanned deforestation and protect these vital ecosystems.

Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR)

This ARR project aims to restore and enhance the vegetative cover of degraded lands in North Kalimantan, with a focus on peatland and mangrove habitats. This involves planting native tree species, rehabilitating damaged ecosystems, and encouraging natural regeneration processes to increase biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration, and improve resilience against climate change impacts. Activities include site selection and preparation, community engagement and capacity building, and the establishment of long-term management plans to ensure the sustainability of reforested and revegetated areas. Through these efforts, the project contributes to the recovery of vital habitats, supports local livelihoods, and advances global environmental goals.
